RESUMO

There is an infrequent disposition of the first metacarpal artery which results in an anastomosis with the common palmar digital artery of the second space, forming an anastomotic system between the deep radial system and the superficial ulnar system. The radial system in turn, through the first dorsal interosseous artery, anastomoses with a collateral of the common palmar digital artery of the second space, ending as the ulnar palmar digital artery of the thumb and establishing a second anastomotic system. A third anastomosis is established in one case, between the common palmar digital artery of the fourth space and the fourth metacarpal artery. To this may be added the classic anastomosis between the superficial branch of the ulnar artery and the deep branch of the radial artery, i.e. the deep palmar arch.

RESUMO

BACKGROUND: The proper palmar digital arteries arise infrequently from dorsal metacarpal arteries. This work reports the second dorsal metacarpal artery unusual ending and a vascular variation related to the superficial palmar arch. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Fresh human upper limbs routine dissection, from a male cadaver, injected with coloured elastomeric material, immersed in 10% formalin. RESULTS: The second dorsal metacarpal artery presented terminal branches, the index finger medial proper digital palmar artery and the middle finger lateral proper digital palmar artery. At the division point of both terminal branches, the second dorsal metacarpal artery anastomoses with a thin forth common digital palmar artery. CONCLUSIONS: The value of this knowledge about the infrequent vascular dispo-sition lies in vascularised flaps design using the second dorsal metacarpal artery. RESUMO

To conduct the survey were used 35 (thirty-five) red-browned parrots (A. rhodocorytha), adults, captive, of both genders and clinically healthy, belonging to the live collection of the Museum of Biology Teacher Mello Leitao, located in Santa Teresa, Espírito Santo, Brazil. Harvests were performed in the morning, by puncture of the brachial vein getting 0.5mL of blood stored in EDTA for a period no longer than 6 hours. Blood smears of fresh material were made at collection, stained using the method of May-Grunwald-Giemsa. Analysis of blood elements was done by cell counting in a mirrored Neubauer chamber using Natt and Herrick solution at a ratio of 2:200 as diluent. For the analysis of the methodology, homoglobinometry cyanide hemoglobin using commercial kits by colorimetry on a semi-automatic biochemical analyzer was used. After completion of the statistical data the following parameters were obtained (mean±standard deviation): Erythrocytes (x106/µl): 2.68±0.56; Hemoglobin (g/dl): 14.27±0.69; Hematocrit (%): 53±3.38; Mean corpuscular volume (fl): 206.7±45.82; Mean corpuscular hemoglobin (pg): 56.4±14.46; Mean corpuscular hemoglobin concentration (%): 27.5±1.19; Thrombocytes (x3/µl): 25.8 ± 10.5; Total plasma protein (g/dl) 5.4±0.5; Leukocytes (x103/dl): 3.1±2; Heterophile (/uL): 1937±1676; Lymphocytes (/uL): 1144±599; Monocytes (/uL): 24.4 ± 28.2; Basophils (/uL): 42.2±46.2; Eosinophils (/uL): 11.7±19.9. In the relation between males and females, no significant differences were found in any hematological parameter evaluated.(AU)

In wild animals, containment is the moment of greatest stress caused by the investigator to the animal due to its natural resistance to the moment of capture, handling, containment and transport, attitudes frankly contrary to his nature. In birds, the restraint must meet certain criteria in order to control the animal's movements, avoiding trauma at the same time that you need to keep your breathing amplitude. The high risk of death during the restraint of these animals raised the need to design a device, from bottles of poly ethylene terephthalate (PET), for containing parrots-browed Amazon (Amazona rhodocorytha), a parrot endemic to the Atlantic Forest in southeastern Brazil, and endangered with extinction, which allowed the observation of respiration, the reduction of handling time of birds for collection of biological material, and consequent reduction of stress and risk of death during the evaluation of several biological data and health of the bird. The PET bottle container can be used as a model for any bird, provided it suits the size of the animal.

INTRODUCTION: Double innervation of the brachialis muscle has been previously reported in anatomical studies. This study aims to investigate the frequency and clinical significance of double innervation of brachialis by anatomical and electromyographic techniques. MATERIALS AND METHODS: (1) The existence, origin and pattern of distribution of a branch from the radial nerve to brachialis were dissected on 20 cadaveric arms. (2) Nerve conduction studies (NCS) of 100 patients were performed. The radial nerve was stimulated, registering muscle potentials (MP) in the brachialis muscle. Subsequently, another MP was obtained by Erb's stimulation, corresponding to the whole brachialis innervation. The relative percentage of innervation from the radial nerve was calculated. (3) Two patients with lesions of the lateral cord of the brachial plexus and preserved elbow flexion were submitted to NCS. RESULTS: Double innervation was found in 65 % of the anatomical preparations, following different patterns of distribution. In the NCS, 90% of the patients showed MP in the brachialis muscle after stimulating the radial nerve. The mean percentage of relative innervation was 11 %. Two patients with lesions of the lateral cord showed an important contribution from the radial nerve. CONCLUSIONS: Variations in the relative percentage of innervation from the radial nerve could be due to the different sizes and shapes of this branch. The functional significance of this branch can become crucial if the main innervation to the brachialis muscle fails. When planning surgical antero-external approach to the humerus, it should be kept in mind and preserved.

RESUMO

In this study, the authors present the results of the investigation of arteries that replace digital collaterals of the radial side of the hand when the superficial palmar arch (SPA) does not develop completely. The replacement occurs with the first interosseous dorsal and the first interosseous palmar arteries. The former takes place through the middle developed branch that issues the radial collateral of the thumb and the ulnar collateral of the little finger whereas the latter takes place in three cases: a) presence of a branch entering into the retroadductor space and finishing like the previously mentioned; b) the origin of the trunk of the ulnar collateral of the thumb finger and the radial collateral of the index finger; c) due to the origin of both collaterals of the thumb finger. In cases when the SPA does not issue the fourth palmar collateral, this one is replaced by the second palmar interosseous artery, a branch of the deep palmar arch. These three arteries are combined to form three different basic kinds of arterial replacement that are described, adding a fourth group of exceptions that does not fit into any of the categories mentioned previously.

RESUMO

Sixty-four patients were evaluated for urinary tract infection (UTI) during the first six months after renal transplantation. Eighty per cent received the allograft from a living, related donor and 37% were female. The median age was 33.8 years. All the patients received cefazolin as perioperative antibiotic prophylaxis. No prophylaxis was given during the bladder catheterization period, which had a median duration of 5.9 days. Nineteen per cent developed predisposing urological factors (PUF). The incidence of UTI was 41% and 15% of all these patients developed bacteremia from this source. UTI was observed in 50% of the patients without PUF between the 5th and 12th days post-transplantation, and these cases had been detected by the control urine culture performed when the bladder catheter was withdrawn. This group of patients accounted for 14% of all the patients. Recurrence was present in 42% of the patients with UTI (19% had reinfection, 4% relapse and 19% both). They were more frequent in patients with PUF than in the patients without; 78% vs. 24%, respectively (p < 0.05). The overall UTI incidence was also higher; 75% vs. 33%, respectively (p < 0.05). The same was observed for the median number of episodes (3 vs. 1). The organisms most frequently isolated were E. faecalis (21%). E. cloacae (17%), and E. coli (17%). Species prevalence differs from that of other reports, probably due to the different institutional antibiotic management. Since half of the UTI episodes suffered by patients without PUF were associated to bladder catheterization, there is a need to institute antibiotic prophylaxis in our center.

RESUMO

The findings in a study of the general circulation of the suprarenal glands in 25 cases, and particularly of the left glands in 50 cases, are presented. The vessels arose from three pedicles: superior, middle and inferior. The inferior pedicle was the most irregular, with a frequent contribution from the gonadal artery to the inferior part of the gland; this artery should not be regarded as merely an accessory vessel. On the left side an inconstant posterior pedicle, separate from the others, was found in 26% of cases. Two forms of gonadal artery supplying the gland (8%) are described, an upper origin type at the renal artery level and an aberrant type.

RESUMO

The present work deals with a study of the supraduodenal a. in 30 specimens. It was present in 28 cases: when absent it was substituted by the right gastric a. Its origin is discussed, the most frequent being the gastroduodenal a., with 2 cases in the pericholedochal plexus. Distribution to the distal two thirds of the upper portion of the duodenum was constant, extending to the supra- and retroduodenal portions of the common duct. Its anastomosis with the gastric right a. and the posterior superior pancreaticoduodenal a. was established in half the cases, being more frequent with the former.

RESUMO

This is a study of the origin of the palmar collateral arteries of the thumb and radial side of the index finger. The different patterns of the main trunk, the first palmar interosseous artery, in the commissure are discussed, together with the relations of its branches with those of the superficial palmar arch and its relations with the accessory fasciculi of the adductor pollicis and first dorsal interosseous muscles.
